Unemployment Rate Remains Stable

BATON ROUGE – The state’s unemployment rate for April 2006 remained unchanged from March at 4.8 percent and was below the April 2005 unemployment rate of 5.2 percent. Nonfarm employment declined two tenths of a percent in April.

“Jobs in the mining and construction industries have continued to expand this month,” said Secretary of Labor John Warner Smith. “Mining was the only industry sector with continued annual job growth since the hurricanes struck last year. Construction has steadily added workers since last December, and more workers are needed.”

According to estimates, the state’s civilian labor force in April 2006 was 1,872,671, up from 1,871,974 in March. The number of employed in April fell slightly to 1,782,608, from 1,782,722 in March. Louisiana’s number of unemployed for April was 90,063, up from 89,252 for the previous month. Nationally the unemployment rate of 4.7 percent for April 2006 also showed no change over the month, but was below the year-ago level of 5.1 percent.

Unadjusted unemployment rates compare parishes and metropolitan statistical areas (MSAs) to the state. The April 2006 unadjusted unemployment rate for Louisiana was 4.1 percent, down from the March 2006 rate of 4.4 percent. Three parishes tied for the lowest unemployment rate at 2.7 percent; they were Cameron, Lafayette, and La Salle. East Carroll Parish had the highest unemployment rate with 8.5 percent for April.

Preliminary seasonally adjusted statewide total nonfarm employment for April 2006 was 1,759,500 compared to 1,763,900 for the revised March 2006 figure, for a decrease of 4,400 workers or two tenths of a percent. There are laws about missed days and injury pay claims at your employment place
By law, you must be unable to work for seven days (including weekends and holidays) before you are eligible for temporary disability benefits. Benefits are retroactive to the first day. The seven days need not be consecutive. Please note that there is no similar waiting period to receive medical benefits or permanent disability benefits. Those benefits are due, if warranted, regardless of the number of lost workdays.
